Port Master-list candidates attempt suicide
Visakhapatnam, October 25, 2004

The 111 day old protest by the port master-list candidates on Monday witnessed two of them trying to commit suicide and the police swinging into action to disperse a protest demonstration. As the port administration was not heeding to their demand, the master-list candidates of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust employees who retired on medical grounds or of deceased employees seeking employment in the port took out a procession on the 111th day of their relay hunger strike as the Board of Directors of the Port Trust was meeting on Monday with abolition of direct recruitment policy reportedly as one of the points of agenda.

After the procession, in which the parents of the candidates also participated reached the Administrative Office building of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust, one of the protesters threatened to jump form the top of the building but was prevented from doing so by a police constable in plainclothes while another doused himself with kerosene and threatened to immolate himself but he was also taken away by the police. The police used force to disperse the demonstration in which 45 persons were injured.

The city committee of the CPI (M) condemned the unprovoked and indiscriminate lathicharg on the port maser list candidates as well as their illegal arrests.
