Kanchi Swami Jayendra Saraswati arrest condemned

Visakhapatnam, November 12, 2004

Swami Jayendra SaraswatiThe BJP unit of the city condemned the arrest of the Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Swami Jayendra Saraswti.

In a statement on Friday, the BJP Visakha II Assembly constituency convener, M.Ramakrishna Raju said it was most unfortunate that the Swami, who had the highest respect among the Hindu religious leaders, was treated shabbily by the Tamilnadu and Andhra Police. He demanded the immediate release of Swami and warned that the BJP would launch agitation all over the country if demand was not conceded. Yuddanapudi Aayyanapantulu of Mahakameswari Peetam said it is a direct attack on Hindus and Hindu religion.

He felt that there was a conspiracy to defame the high seat of Hindu religion and warned of agitation if he was not released. The district committee of the BMS and the city unit of Viswa Hindu Parishad said the act of the police is in a way to disrepute to the Sankaracharya.

A meeting of important Hindu religious leaders is being held to discuss the course of action in the wake of the arrest of Kanchi Swami Jayendra Saraswti on Thursday. The meeting will be held at the Pushpagari Peetam office in Begumpet in afternoon after culmination of a rally proposed to be taken out by followers of the Kanchi seer from Sundarayya Vignana Kendram.

Swami Vijayendra Saraswti, the junior see of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam now camping in Mahabubnagar is expected to attend the meeting. Swaroopandra Saraswti of Sarada Peetam is also flying down from Visakhapatnam to participate in the meeting.
