Third phase of drainage project to be taken up
Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation plans to take up the third phase of the underground drainage project, estimated to cost Rs.100 crores, as an annuity project to extended the facility to the entire city.

English medium in VMC Schools from Class VI
The general council of the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has decided to introduce teaching in English Medium from Class VI in five VMC schools. At the VMC council meeting on Saturday evening, some members suggested introduction of English medium even at the primary school level. But finally, it was agreed for the earlier proposal to introduce it only from Class VI.

Contractors allege corruption in civic bodies
The AP State Municipal Corporation Contractors' Association has alleged high corruption in all the municipal corporations due to the 'lopsided' transfer policy adopted by the Government. The president of the APSMCCA told reporters on Sunday that many engineers were allowed to continue in the same posts for a long time in some cases for 10 to 15 years and this led to the contractors being harassed

First hospice for cancer patients opened
The Kanthi Charitable Trust has set up the States first and the countrys fifth hospice for cancer patients in the city. Located in the Official colony, the hospice will initially accommodate 12 patients. Twelve more are expected to be admitted later according to the Chairman of the Kanthi Charitable Trust.

International Sports complex in the city soon

Hindustan Shipyard Limited bags bulk carrier order
In a significant breakthrough, Hindustan Shipyard Limited(HSL) has bagged an order for the construction of two 30,000 dwt bulk-carriers. According to the official spokesman of the company, the order was obtained against stiff global tender from the Gandhidharam based Good-earth Maritime Ltd.

Plan to save airport from submersion
The Visakhapatnam District Administration will conduct survey proposals to prevent the airport from being submerged by the excess flood water from the Meghadrigedda reservoir during the monsoon season. The plan envisages diverting the water to an abandoned tank in Sabbavaram mandal, The Bhudevi tank. The decision was taken at a review meeting convened by the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konatala Ramakrishna with the District Collect Sunil Sharma and other senior officials here on Friday.

Contractor blacklisted
The Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has decided to blacklist the contractor who failed to fill a pit in Butchirajupalem leading to the death of a six year old girl on Thursday. The Mayor Rajana Ramani said on Friday action would be taken against the contractor for negligence. She announced an ex gratia of RS 5,000/- to the bereaved family.

Venkateswara Kalyanostavam
Elaborate arrangements are being made to celebrate the annual Tirukalyanotsavam of Sri Venkateswara Swami at the temple on Srungamani hill in the Port area between May 29th and June 4th. The Executive Officer, speaking to reporters said that the weeklong celebrations would begin on Saturday evening. The Kalyanostavam would be performed on Saturday.

Murderer surrenders in Court
One of the suspects in the murder of a woman in a shop near Rama Talkies last month Mr. Guruprasad surrendered in the III Metropolitan Magistrate court here on Wednesday. He was sent to remand.

Applications called for PMRY
As the Prime Minister Rojgar Yojana has been extended to 2004-05, The General Manager, District Industries Centre invited applications from unemployed youth for assistance under the Scheme. Call letters will be sent to those 3 who have already applied. Other can attend the interviews directly.

The Joint Action Committee for the Protection of Andhra University has demanded dismissal of the Vice Chancellor, Y C Simhadri, for what they dubbed his undemocratic and vindictive attitude against the teaching and non-teaching staff and the students. In a memorandum submitted to the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konatala Ramakrishna on Tuesday. The JAC convener, S.Surappadu demanded that the findings of the three member legislative Committee, which was constituted last year following an agitation by the students be made public.

Y-Axis an organization in the business of providing counselling on education and immigration opportunities plans to appoint its franchisee in the city by mid-June.

Cop booked in power theft case
The vigilance and anti-power theft squad conducted raids on residential quarters of ITDA employees at Anantagiri in the district and booked cases of power pilferage. The cases were registered after three employees belonging to the medical and health, and police departments and EPDCL were found to be indulging in theft of energy by directly tapping power.

Two commit suicide
In separate incidents, two persons reportedly committed suicide on Friday. According to police in two separate incidents hanged themselves at their houses and inquiry is on.

High temperatures recorded in Visakhapatnam
The Coastal city of Visakhapatnam reported some of the hottest readings on temperature. The Visakhapatnam Airport reported 43 degrees Celsius while the Visakhapatnam City reported 41 degrees. Cyclone Warning Centre director JVM Naidu told TNIE that the heat wave conditions may continue for another two days.

BIS seizes unlicensed drinking water sachets
The Bureau of Indian Standards had seized huge stock of packaged drinking water sachets during a raid at Srikakulam on Monday according to the Director and Head of the BIS N.P.Kawale. The raid was conducted on Surya Industries after receiving reports that the ISI mark was being misused in the case of units packaged drinking water sachets with the brand name of Aqua Happy. English medium from class VI in Municipal Schools
The Standing Committee of the Visakhpatnam Municipal Corporation at its meeting here on Friday approved the proposal to introduce English medium from Standard VI in municipal schools from the present academic year.Speaking to media, the Standing Committee Chairman PGK Varma said that initilaly English medium would be introduced at sid or seven schools in different wards. The object was to provide English education to poor children who cannot affort to pay high fee and join private schools.Teachers would be employed on contract basis.
