Visakhapatnam Steel Plant hands Gangavaram Port land to Government
Visakhapatnam, August 27, 2004

The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has handed over 1400 acres of land to the Andhra Pradesh Government. The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant belongs to the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL). The land was allocated to the Steel Plant by the Government of Andhra Pradesh way back for the development of a captive port and for afforestation around the steel plant.

The land will be used by a private sector company - Gangavaram Port Ltd. who will develop the Gangavaram minor port.

Additional General Manager of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant PK Mohapatra and K Mangapathi Rao Commissioner of Ports, Government of Andhra Pradesh signed the handing-over documents.

A difference of opinion has prevailed in the last few years between the state government and the RINL management. The state government was keen to set up a minor port at Gangavaram, adjacent to the steel plant.
