Squats near DEO office with a cloth spread in front of him
The MLC MVS Sharma staged a novel protest at VUDA office on Tuesday against what he called the apathy of educational officials regarding payment of salaries to teachers posted at Bheemunipatnam Mandal. The MLC squatted at the entrance of the VUDA building which also houses the District Education Officer's office with a cloth spread out in front of him.
Visitors to the VUDA office dropped coins and currency notes after reading the placards that spoke of the plight of teachers, who were not paid their salaries. The Education Department had conducted counseling for transfer of teachers in August this year. A total number of 144 teachers had applied for transfer to Bheemunipatnam mandal though the sanctioned strength for that mandal was only 130. The Educational authorities cleared the applications and gave transfer orders to all the applicants. The District Treasury Officials raised an objection when it came to payment of salaries to 144 teachers in the mandal, the Education department did not respond and the salaries for the teachers who joined last were not disbursed. When the education authorities questioned why the teachers were not paid their salaries, the salaries for all the 144 teachers were stopped for the month of November.
The MLC Sharma took the issue to the notice of the Education Commissioner on November 4 and against brought it to the notice of the Additional Commissioner on November 12. Though they promised to take appropriate action on the issue, nothing was done. Sharma said that he has taken up this token strike to move the education officials. Teachers are being inconvenienced for the mistake of officials. Meanwhile, the DEO gave an assurance that the salaries of 136 teachers would be released immediately and action would be taken for the release of the salaries of the remaining teachers by November 20. Sharma said that the Rs.1,930 collected by way of seeking alms would be contributed to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
