The Centre will come up near Beach Road and will be built with a cost of Rs. 3.5 crores
The Vice Chancellor of Andhra University, B Satyanarayana said on Tuesday that the Chief Minister, K Rosaiah will lay foundation for the Rs.3.5 crores Convocation Centre of Andhra University near the Beach Road on November 25 during his visit to the city. This was the first phase of the major project established at a cost of Rs.10 crores and would consist of a 3,000 capacity auditorium and an open air auditorium expected to accommodate around 10,000 people.
The project would come up on the University land near the Rajiv Smruti on the beach road. The plan was drawn after the university officials visited many convocations centres in the country, he added. He further said that the University needs bigger facilities as more and more major national and international conferences are being held in the campus. The aim is also to create facilities that benefit the Andhra University and also the people of Visakhapatnam.
According to him, the cost of the first phase would be met from the Government for the Indian Science Congress held during January last. In response to questions, he said that the existing Dr.Ambedkar Hall, one of the important and historic land marks of the city would not be disturbed as it is being considered as a heritage structure. Chairs in the auditorium would be replaced and a fresh cost of paid would be given to the entire building. The work expected to be completed during summer vacation.
