Project to be taken under JNNURM
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation plans to change the face of the slums in the city soon. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission funds are being used for the renewal of the city through the GVMC. The 200 odd slums have been taken up for housing and creating of infrastructure like roads, drains, street lighting and drinking water facilities.
In the first phase, works in 31 slums were taken up at a cost of Rs.200 crore. Internal roads, drainage and drinking water facilities are being created at Kommadi and Bakkannapalem near Madhurawada, Talaruvanipalem near Duvvada, Mantrivanipalem near Lankelapalem, Pulagalapalem near Pendurty, Kaparada and Gnanapuram and at Gantyada. The slums are emerging as planed residential townships with group housing launched under the JNNURM scheme. Nearly Rs.160 crore is being spent to build 15,320 houses with a living space of 25 sq.mt. The cost of each unit is Rs.1.4 lakh.
GVMC Superintendent Engineer, T Moses Kumar said that the JNNURM scheme is expected to transform the face of the city. Th 32 villages which were merged into the GVMC will also witness development of infrastructure and housing. The city will be totally rid of huts and will be replaced by pucca houses. In the first phase nearly 15,300 will benefit and in the next phase 19,000 would benefit.
