Three severely injured
According to the Eastern Naval Command PRO Commander Babu said that five naval personnel died and three were severely injured in a mishap abroad INS Jalashwa in the Bay of Bengal today evening. He said that the mishap took place while the ship was participating in a joint naval exercise of Eastern and Western Naval Commands off Port Blair. The injured are undergoing treatment at Naval Base hospital.
He said INS Jalashwa, a landing dock for merely the USS Trenton, was commissioned into the Navy six months ago. The 16,900 tonne INS Jalashwa is the second largest of the Navy after aircraft carrier INS Viraat. It is the first warship from the United States to join in the Indian Navy.
According to available reports, the cause of the accident was not known, but medical personnel on board the ship are reported to be handling the situation and the ship is moving towards Port Blair. Naval Headquarters has ordered a court of inquiry in the incident. It may be recalled that on January 7, INS Sindhughosh, a Russian kilo class submarine, collided with a merchant vessel, 10 nautical miles off the Mumbai coast. Defence Minister, AK Anthony expressed deep regret at the loss of lives.
