Alleges harassment in the form of reopening of past assignments
The Builders’ Association of India’s fourth Managing Committee and General Council meeting held here on Sunday. They asked the government to return dues of Value Added Tax collected from construction companies, relax the five percent ceiling on tenders for works and include any new taxes in the revises estimates.
Speaking to media, the all India president PR Mundle, honorary general treasurer DL Desai said VAT was being collected at various levels and once the refund due to a company was sought, reopening of past assessments was resorted to and hefty demands slapped instead of refunding money. If a legal remedy was to be sought, 50 percent of the money in dispute had to be deposited in the court and the impacts the finances of companies concerned.
Association State president K Sudershan Reddy said though VAT came into effect from April 1, 2005, assessment between 1999 and 2003 were being reopened and alleged harassment. He said the matter was represented to the Principal Secretary, Finance and the Chief Minister. He added if decision came by the end of March, the association would contemplate stopping of works. He wanted that no tax, other than Income Tax, levied on government works.
