Cmde N Banerjee inaugurates AUV Centre at NSTL
An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) that serves as a nodal point for development of AUVs was inaugurated at the Naval Science & Technology Laboratory (NSTL) on Wednesday by AUV Project Director Cmde N Banerjee. AUV are robotic systems capable of carrying payloads. These are a new class of intelligent underwater human supervision that can undertake survey, surveillance and reconnaissance.
Development of such vessels requires inter disciplinary efforts in the fields of hydrodynamics, control and guidance, battery technologies, propulsion, materials, computation, miniature hardware, acoustics radio communications and vision systems.
Banerjee lauded NSTL's efforts to develop world class AUVs and exuded confidence that it would reach greater heights in fields related to Naval Science. NSTL director, V Bhujanga Rao said the AUV Centre was built at a cost of Rs.1.67 crore. It has a large assembly bay to enable the assembly of AUVs and houses a robotic lab, a control and propulsion lab and testing and turning lab.
