Demand notices stand withdrawn
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) which met here on Monday under the chairmanship of P Janardhana Rao began with a stormy note over the issue of payment of property tax and the related Government Orders (GO)s. The Council passed a resolution condoling the death of former Indian Prime Minister Chandrasekhar and the blast victims in Hyderabad.
The Corporator from CPI, Eswaramma, went to the Mayor's chair demanding withdrawal of notices pertaining to the property tax. Immediately, Corporators of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) joined the issue and began a showdown and were engaged in an argument which created unruly scenes. The Congress corporators remained spectators and demanded the suspension of the Telugu Desam Party corporators. This lead the Mayor to suspend the session for a half an hour. When the Council met again, the discussion once again rotated round the property tax. At the Mayor's behest, Commissioner Mukesh Kumar Meena explained the contents of the GO No. 635 and 732 was an extension of the GO 635 and toned town the tax burden reasonably both on the domestic and commercial front.
The Commissioner said that the GO pertained to the entire state as such the Council has no powers to tamper with its contents. But the Government can be requested to consider a resolution if passed by the Council. The Mayor finally announced that the demand notices stand withdrawn and that the provisions of the latest GO would be implemented. The maximum hike of property tax has been restricted to 75 percent on residential buildings and 150 percent on commercial buildings. The Council also approved the leasing of a site for food courts near RK Beach by a private party for 18 years.
