Floods render Airport unfit for operations of flights
The Area Manager (Marketing) R Rajasekharan said that all domestic flights from the Visakhapatnam Airport were cancelled as the terminal remained inaccessible and the run way rendered almost unusable due to the rains that are lashing the city and the outlook for the next two days remaining to be no different. The Indian Airlines announced cancellation of all its flights on Sunday also.
Surplus water from Meghadrigeeda Reservoir and adjoining streams surrounded the airport and water entered the Arrival and Departure lounges making it difficult for passengers to enter or to exit. The parking lot was inundated with knee-level water. Irrigation Department Executive Engineer, KBR Prasad said that excess water reaching the reservoir due to rains in the region has forced the Meghadrigeeda to lift four out of its six gates. The outflow is expected to come down further by the evening.
The Air traffic Controller C Pattabhi said all 12 flights were cancelled not because of the flooding of the runway but due to the stagnation of water on the approach roads to the airport that made transit difficult. He made it clear that there is water on both the old and the new runways though.
