Denuge and seasonal diseases on rampant in Visakhapatnam
Heavy rains in the past few days claimed five lives and inundated several low lying areas in the city and parts of rural areas. The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) region experienced a tough time with rain waters approaching knee levels. Overflowing drains and stagnated water have cut off Gnanapuram. Road traffic is diverted via the flyover that links it to Kancharapalem Mettu and the NH 5. Several habitations in Gnanapuram were submerged and a few people were moved to safety.
Nearly 100 orphans residing in a private home were moved to Hindustan Zinc Limited Club for safety. The rains deteriorated the sanitary conditions in several parts of the city make the life miserable. The Housing Board Colony at Purushottapuram in Pendurty mandal was submerged by overflowing water from a tank. The low lying areas abutting Balacheruvu Road and some places at Pedagantyada were also marooned. Educational institutions remained closed.
The vast tracts of vacant land around Visakhapatnam Airport resembled reservoirs as water from the streams mainly from Meghadrigedda accumulated there. However, flight operations remained unaffected as the flood water was diverted. Passengers though have to walk their way to the airport as few cab drivers hesitate to drop till the airport as water flooded the airport approach road. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials made a field inspection of the premises and its surrounding areas.
