To make permanent houses to all urban poor
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is exercising to make the city a 'Slum- less City' by end of 2010. The GVMC is planning to construct permanent houses for all eligible urban poor under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM). The GVMC Planning Department is working out economics and finances to provide housing facility to all the homeless poor in the city.
According to a survey, there are 61,000 applicants who are eligible for pucca houses. The GVMC Commissioner, Mukesh Kumar Meena said door to door enumeration will be conducted to identify beneficiaries. This task will be completed by October 10, 2007, he said.
The State Government has sanctioned Rs. 189 crores towards the construction of 15,300 houses and tenders have been finalized for building 6,000 houses while construction of 2,000 houses at Yendada has already begun. He said that proposals worth Rs. 214 crore for undertaking 10,000 houses have been sent to Centre. Another Rs. 28 crore is being spent at Vadlapudi panchayat on the newly merged GVMC.
