Makes away with 3 kg gold and Rs. 16.90 cash
Two unidentified persons posing as policemen waylaid and robbed a businessman of more than 3kgs of gold and Rs.16.90 lakhs of cash in the early hours on Sunday. The Jeweler V Ramesh of Kurupam Market lodged a complaint with the Two Town police that when he was going to the railway station in the early hours, two persons stopped the car at Allipuram Police quarters.
According to ACP (Traffic and in-charge East) Devanandam, the fake policemen questioned the jeweler about the contents in his suitcase and when he replied that he was taking gold and cash, they charged him with carrying contraband and asked him to come to the police station. Though some persons tried to come to the rescue, the two told that he was in possession of contraband and scared them away. The fake cops started on a two wheeler and asked the jeweler to follow them. But by the time they reached the Police station, the duo were not there.
Ramesh, who has been in the business in the city for more than a decade, maintained that his assistants who proceeded him to the station were also searched. He said that he was sending the gold to Coimbatore by his assistants for getting ornaments made. His assistants were to leave by Janmabhoomi Express. The ACP said that the two town police registered a case are investigating. The City Crime Station police are searching for the two persons involved and that four teams for are formed for the purpose.
