TDP MLA Venakata Rao along with agitators taken into custody
The police have taken Payakaraopet MLA Ch Venakata Rao along with the agitators into custody during their agitation against a bulk drug manufacturing unit, Htero Drugs Private Limited at Rajaiahpeta in Nakkapalli mandal. The incident took place when hundreds of agitators tried to barge into the firm but were stopped by the police. Two women were injured as the police resorted to lathi charge as the agitators surged ahead in violation of the Prohibitory orders and the injured were taken to hospital.
The fishermen were opposing the laying of a pipeline meant to empty effluents from the drug unit into the sea close to their habitations and the project would cause environmental pollution. The MLA along with the fishermen laid siege to the factory premises demanding the project be shelved. The police foiled their attempts to move ahead apprehending trouble.
As the situation is going out of control, the police left with no alternative except to use force and detained the MLA and released the others later. The situation continues to be tense as the agitation is still going on under the MLA's leadership.
