India believed to be having 30 million diabetics
Participating in a meeting to mark the observance of World Diabetes Day on Wednesday, the King George Hospital Superintendent Ravi Raju said that diabetes is a world wide phenomenon and early detection and effective management can prevent complications like heart, kidney ailments.
He expressed concern over the impact of childhood or insulin-dependent diabetes. Apollo Hospitals general manager Jagan Mohan said the Diabetes Day observance aims at creating awareness on the rise in prevalence of type I and type II diabetes among different age groups. He said that an estimated 30 million Indians suffer from diabetes and the number would touch 79 million by 2030.
Speaking on the occasion, KV Subramanyam, DM (Endocrinology) said the symptoms like extreme thirst, hunger, tiredness, frequent urination and slow pace of healing of wonds. It is a patient and not the doctor who plays a key role in controlling diabetes by regular exercise and controlled diet. The Superintend of Police, Akun Sabharwal flagged off a 'Diabetes Walk' at Ramakrishna Beach in the morning. Apollo Hospitals and Novo Nordisk conducted a free blood screening camp for diabetics.
