Demands lifting of non-bailable cases against the reporters
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Visakhapatnam President CMA Zaheer Ahmed strongly condemned the arrest of two vernacular daily reporters for writing on alleged irregularities in the 'Indiramma Housing Scheme in Kurnool'. He described the arrest as an infringement of the freedom of the press and said that the action of ruling government was akin to President Musharraf's rule in Pakistan.
Ahmed charged the Government of allegedly booking cases against the journalists as they had written against the housing scheme and said that it is the duty of journalists to bring out the irregularities to the notice of the people.
He recalled that the Chief Minister had announced rewards for anyone who brings out irregularities in the Indiramma Scheme and questioned that the arrest of two reporters is the reward the Government had offered. In another statement, the APUWJ Greater Visakha President P Narayan and AP Electronic Media Journalists Association President R Babu Rao condemned the arrests of the journalists and immediate lifting of the non-bailable cases against them.
