Laborers dies, 16 others injured
The roof of a madapam extension under construction caved in at Sector VIII at Ukkunagaram on Thursday evening, leaving three persons dead and 16 others injured. According to available sources, the condition of two of the injured were critical. The Shiridi Saibaba Temple Committee at Ukkunagaram recently decided to construct a madapam at the temple. Although, the madapam construction began recently, the slab was laid on Thursday morning.
According to a resident of Ukkunagaram said that the roof collapsed at around 4.30 in the evening when the workers were relaxing under it. The slab came crashing down as they ran out. However, a few could not make it and died.
Top police officials, CISF, Steel Plant, Fire Department personnel supervised the rescue operations. The police rushed to the spot and retrieved the body of one Nookaraju, while the Fire Service personnel and police are making efforts to recover the bodies of two women labourers who are belonging to Parawada mandal. It may be recalled that a similar mishap occurred on November 3 last year where nine persons were crushed to death when the roof of Gana Sabha collapsed. The trade union leaders attributed the tragedy to the callousness of the Steel Plant Management. The Management has assured that no new constructions would be approved without proper plans and supervisions.
