SFI launches demonstration; Stages Rasta rokho at MVP Colony
The death of a girl staying at the Tribal Welfare Department Hostel in MVP Colony on Friday due to diarrhea sparked protest by students in Visakhapatnam and in Araku Valley on Thursday. The students have been complaining the poor conditions of the hostel. Nearly 40 students are staying a room and the drinking water is contaminated and poor quality of food.
Several of the students were suffering with diarrhea for the last few days were sent to a local hospital. K Bhagyalakshmi, studying first year Bachelor of Science (BSc) at VMC Mahila College had gone to her native village Battivalasa near Araku Valley died on Thursday night allegedly due to diarrhea. Soon of after the news reached here, the Students Federation of India launched a protest and girl students held a demonstration and organized a rasta rokho in MVP colony junction demanding better facilities in the hostel. They demanded the government to take action on the hostel warden. They demanded construction of a water tank to meet the drinking water needs and submitted a memorandum to DRO Satyanaryana. Meanwhile, the TDP Urban district president Zaheer Ahmed met the agitating students. They demanded Rs.5 lakhs ex-gratia for the bereaved family of Bhagyalakshmi. On Friday, nearly 30 students were taken to KGH for treatment.
The Students Federation of India and AP Girijana Sangham held protest demonstrations. The victim’s classmates speaking to media at Araku Valley on Friday said that she had fallen ill and were given some medicines. Later, they were told to go home. The girl died on way to the CHC at Araku Valley late on Thursday night.
