Strike against Digital meters
Due to bandh by auto drivers, the autos were off the city roads from 6am to 5pm on Monday. Among the main demands, they demanded against installation of Digital meters for the autos. As a part of the bandh, the auto drivers associations conducted a public meeting at Gandhi Statue at Asilmetta.
Speaking on the occasion, the AITUC district general secretary SK Rehman demanded to withdraw the orders of installation of Digital meters for the autos immediately. The other demands include plying of autos in the highways, the minimum educational qualification of eighth standard and others. Rehman demanded immediate withdrawal of GO 213 which is not beneficial to the auto drivers. INTUC general secretary Kondababu said that the GO 155 that was issued in 2002 obstructing the autos to ply on National Highways and even though the government has permitted to ply autos within a radius of 60 kilometers in the city, he expressed displeasure over the obstructions of autos plying from city to Gajuwaka and from Gajuwaka to city. Later, a rally was taken out from Gandhi statue to RTA office through APSRTC Complex, Tatichetlapalem and staged a dharna before the RTA office and submitted a memorandum to DTC.
Deputy Transport Commissioner clarified that there are no specific instructions from the Government to implement the Digital meters and said that even though the government has decided to implement the same in five cities in the state but later postponed the same. He said as far as Visakhapatnam is concerned that there are no specific instructions in installation of digital meters for the autos. He said as far as the minimum educational qualifications are concerned, that will be implemented in to to but will not be applicable to those who have already obtained licenses and are plying autos. He asked the representatives who met him said that radium stickers should be arranged on the rear side of the autos to avoid accidents at night times. To crate awareness among the auto drivers, a special drive will be conducted from Tuesday he said.
