502 slums are in the city
The Union Minster of State for Mines T. Subbirami Reddy attended a review meeting on various programmes on urban development works under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) at the Collectorate on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, he said that there are 502 slums in the city an a sum of Rs. 1,400 crore are needed to provide facilities like sewerage, drains, roads and water to the slums while Rs.500 crore for housing.
The joint secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development Raja Mani said that Rs. 49 crore were sanctioned in the last year and Rs. 453 crore will be sanctioned for the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in order to reduce traffic in the city.
The Ministry of Housing and Poverty Elimination Joint Secretary Mohanty made it clear that every slum in the cities should be provided with all facilities by the year 2012 and added that proposals worth Rs. 50 crore would be considered for Visakhapatnam to provide various training programmes.
