To fix the date of commissioning of the new runway
A high-level meeting of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Indian Navy will be held at Visakhapatnam on May 25 to fix a date for commissioning of the new runway at Visakhapatnam Airport and Instrument Landing System which facilitates night landing of wide-bodied planes.
The Chairman of Airports Advisory Committee N Janardhana Reddy presiding over a meeting on Wednesday asserted that the construction of a channel to divert flood waters of Mehadrigedda and Kondagedda reservoirs into the sea would be completed by the end of July. This would enable the airport operation even on rainy season. Air Travelers' Association of India's Visakhapatnam President D Varada Reddy demanded that the airport be centrally air conditioned including the entry and departure terminals. He suggested that arrangements for hassle free operations of lap top computers be made by having separate charging points. He sought an increase in the number of post office, bank and ATM facilities for the convenience of passengers.
Air Traffic Controller C Pattabhi said that the demands of ATAI would be looked into and action would be taken at the earliest. The District Collector Anil Kumar Singhal assured that all works for diversion of flood or rain waters would be completed by the end of July. The Pendurty MLA T Gurumurty Reddy was also present in the meeting.
