Health Minister stresses for eye donation

Specular microscope facility inaugurated at Mohsin Eye Bank

The Minister for Health, K. Rosaiah on Sunday inaugurated a specular microscope costing Rs. 15 lakhs at Mohsin Eye Bank. Speaking on the occasion, he said a people's movement was required to create awareness on eye donation.

Mohsin eye bank is the 15th centre to own such a microscope in the country. The minister complimented the bank for doing a wonderful service and said more awareness should be created so as to remove eyes from accident victims. He added that required legislation was being done to register eye banks for transplantation of crone under the Organ Transplantation Act.

The Chairman of the Eye bank R. Ahikrishna said they had set up satellite stations at Salur, Vizianagaram, Narsipatnam and Anakapalle to sensitize people on eye donation. The secretary AVN Chetty said the eye bank set up five years ago had so far collected 450 corneal tissues and transplanted 250 after conducting HIV, hepatitis and other tests and the eye bank has no tie up with any hospital and was functioning as a community eye bank.
