First consignment manufactured by Steel PlantThe VSP Chairman and Managing Director, Y. Siva Sagar Rao and Visakhapatnam Port Trust Chairman K. Ratna Kishore flagged off the first consignment of 1000 tonnes of steel long products manufactured by Visakhpatnam Steel Plant (VSP) jointly on Monday.
This is the first time that such steel products are being sent by sea by any operator by containers. The multi model operation includes picking up of steel cargoes from VSP, stuffing into containers, transporting the same by ships and finally delivering the cargo at VSP's stockyard at Kolkata.
Speaking on the occasion, the CMD of VSP said the launching of coastal shipping by containers from the city as a milestone. He said coastal shipping was cost effective and environment friendly. He further added that VSP had adopted a long tem plan to produce 60 million tonnes by 2020 by investing Rs. 25,000 crores. Ratna Kishore said Seaways Shipping limited had made a beginning with the launching of coastal shipping from the container terminal.
