Dues pile up over a decade
Majority of the government departments find their names in the list of defaulters prominently displayed in the default list of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation. The prominent one among them are the law enforcers ie., Police department owes to the tune of Rs. 2,63,38, 978 due to the GVMC. The Collectorate owes Rs. 54,91,352, Endowments department owes Rs. 88,70,670 followed by Forest Department Rs. 21,56,120 and so on. These are only a few cases that constitute the Rs. 8 crore odd due from the various departments of the State Government.
In addition to these, nearly Rs. 5 crore is pending from an assortment of minority institutions and charitable trusts and Rs. 7 crores from the 6,000 old dispute cases. The tax dues have piled up over a decade with interest and arrears and the GVMC has asked the State Government to centralize the payment under section 202 (d) of the HMC Act-1995 for all the departments.
According to the available sources, the GVMC cannot take coercive action against the institutions as per a government order, despite a few of them enjoying huge grants from different foreign organizations. The biggest defaulter is the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant hat owes Rs. 53 crores pending against property and vacant land tax. The VSP has filed a case in this respect and the case is under pending.
