MLC along with others arrested for stalling the proceedings
The CPI (M) MLC MVS Sarma and others were arrested on Tuesday for creating a ruckus at the public hearing held by the AP Pollution Control Board on storage of Ammonium nitrate in Mindi area. Activists from Telugu Desam Party and some NGOs opposed the storage of 20,000 tonnes ammonium nitrate in one place as soon as the public hearing began. They raised slogans against the Sravan Shipping which sought environmental clearance for the project. The staged a sit on dharna and tried to stall the proceedings.
This was the first public hearing conducted for storage of ammonium nitrate, a solid chemical used for blasting mining companies. Meanwhile, the MLC Sarma alleged that the location of the go down in the close vicinity of highway hazardous industries like Visakha Refinery, Hindustan Zinc Limited, Coromandel Fertilizers could lead to a Bhopal type tragedy.
However, the management contended that they were taking foolproof measures to prevent any sort of mishap during evacuation of material from the port and storage and transport to various places by adopting wold class technologies.
