Navy's Dornier takes off from airport
The night operation of flights commenced in the airport on Monday with a Dornier of the Indian Navy taking off from the new 10,000 feet runway at 7pm and landing back at 7.30pm. This is the first step towards the commencement of night landing operations of civilian aircrafts pending approval for the amended instrument approach and landing procedures by the Director General of Civil Aviation.
The category I Instrument Landing System set up in the airport along with night landing facility was calibrated by the special flight inspection unit of the Airport Authority of India in May and now ILS is on trial to be tested by the DGCA certified test pilots for 45 days.
Once the DGCA issues its mandatory certificate, the ILS would be thrown open to the regular civilian flight operations.
