Mission against blindness stressed
The Governor of Andhra Pradesh Rameshwar Thakur said on Saturday after inaugurating the Moshin Eye Bank at LV Prasad Eye Institute said that pledge your eyes in support of the mission to eradicate blindness. He stressed the need for awareness among the masses regarding corneal transplantations and appealed to the ophthalmologists to provide high quality eye care and also generate awareness about the magnitude of blindness and it causes.
He asked the doctors to update their knowledge continuously on medical technology. He said that six to eight million people are suffering from corneal blindness in the world and twenty percent from India alone.
Speaking on the occasion, Eastern Naval Command Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Vice Admiral Raman P Suthan pledged ENC's support for the mission to eradicate cornea blindness. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of LV Prasad Eye Institute GN Rao said that 20,000 patients were tested last year and 1400 of them were operated upon. He added that Community participation can only generate awareness among the masses regarding transplantion.
