Hunger strike turns violent
The hunger strike by the Left party leaders took a violent turn on Thursday as the police resorted to lathi charge to control the Left Party activists from entering the Collectorate. A large number of activists observed picketing in the morning obstructing the employees from entering into the Collectorate. Picketing was also observed at the Collectorates and mandal level offices in the three north Andhra districts demanding distribution of lands to the poor and in support of the hunger strike by their State leaders.
Police took into custody more than 200 activists in Visakhapatnam, 100 in Vizianagaram and 58 in Srikakulam according to available sources. Police arrested the CPI Visakhapatnam district president Ch Raghvendra Rao, CPM city secretary K Lokanadham, Party district committee members. Telugu Desam Party activists also participated in the agitation.
As a precautionary measure, the police arrested CPM district secretary M Krishna Murty at his residence in Vizianagaram. They also nabbed nearly 100 persons mostly women. The Telugu Desam Party district president Y Ramana Murty visited the indefinite fast camp at the Collectorate on Thursday and expressed his solidarity.
