Visakhapatnam, January 23, 2007
MP Midiam Babu Rao welcomes the ActThe Bhadrchalam MP M. Babu Rao has welcomed the Tribal Rights Recognition Act 2006 and said that the Act is a boon to tribal people. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the MP said that the both the Houses approved the Bill during the winter session of Parliament. The Act was a result of intense efforts of the CPM to safeguard the interests of tribals. It protects them from exploitation and ensures their welfare, besides granting them rights to the lands they have been cultivating for years, he said.
He further said that there is always a tussle between the tribals and the forest and revenue departments over the land ownership rights. He added that nearly 25,000 land related cases involving 30 lakh acres of scheduled lands in the Agency area were registered against 4.3 lakh tribal peoples spread from Srikakulam to Adilabad districts.
The MP was one of the Parliamentary Committee set up to study the Bill. With the recognition of tribal villages as revenue villages, focus should be laid on developing basic infrastructure etc., he said.
