Conservation and Promotion of mangroves highlighted

The Coastal Protection, Development and Advisory Committee has approved the allocation of Rs. 500 crore for beach nourishment and conservation and promotion of mangroves in the 11th Plan said its chairman SK Agarwal on Friday, January 19, 2007.

He was speaking to media after the committee meeting, steps were taken to prevent coastal degradation, protection of mangrove forests and beach nourishment. The Central and State Governments would initiate steps to check coastal erosion and preserve ecological balance. He said that the Centre would provide 75 percent of the project cost and the rest by the State Government.

He further added that the National Flood Management Project, an allocation of Rs. 8000 crore is in the pipeline to tackle situations arising from calamities. Nearly 25 Chief Engineers of Irrigation Department of all States have participated in the meeting.
