Emphasizes integrated approach to combat cancerSpeaking on the 2nd International Conference on ‘Translational Research for Cancer’, the Vice Chancellor of Andhra University (AU) L. Venugopal Reddy stressed the need for an integrated approach to fight against cancer. He said the volume of cancer research in the world shows the intensity of the challenge posed by cancer. The AU Department of Human Genetics is contributing its mite in evolving a solution to combat the dreaded diseased. The university continues to be in the forefront with other agencies to take the results of research from the laboratory to the hospital bed, he said in his speech.
Chitti R. Murty of New York Medical College said there was a gap between the research agencies and clinical medical practitioners. The two agencies were not easily accessible to each other due to the geographical operational distance, he said. He suggested that establishment of research institutes on the hospital premises so that coordination action could be taken, keeping in view the ground realties at the clinical level. He said that the US government is spending billions of dollars for establishment of regional research institutes.
Lions Cancer Hospital medical director B. Narasimha Rao appreciated the efforts of Murthy to cancer research and prevention. He said that he bore the entire cost of the $20,000 for establishing the Lions Cancer Hospital.
