Central Government agrees to upgrade AUEC to IIT standard

CM lays foundation stone for VIMS

The Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy, while inauguration the International Seminar on Ceramics at AUEC on Monday said that the Central Government has agreed to upgrade the Andhra University Engineering College (AUEC) to IIT Standards. He added that the State Government is also examining the proposal to set up an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Visakhapatnam.

The Chief Minister said that plans are ahead to develop an ‘Education district’ in Visakhapatnam to facilitate the establishment of world-class institutions including foreign universities. He asserted that the Jawahar Knowledge Centres that are yielding good results and projects like the education district would enrich human resources.

He pointed that the ceramic industries have bright future in the State, he observed that the expansion project of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant would spur growth of ceramic sector and around the city. Visakhapatnam Steel Plant CMD Y. Siva Sagar Rao said that it was poised to reach greater heights with the expansion of its capacity to above seven million tonnes. In another function, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the Rs. 120 crore Visakhapatnam Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS). VIMS construction would be commenced in a couple of months and will be completed within one and half years. The cost of construction is estimated to Rs. 80 crore and the rest for equipment and other infrastructure.
