Aims to increase capacity to 6.3 tons by 2008-09History goes when late Prime Minister Smt Indira Gandhi laid the foundation stone for Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on January 20, 1971. The birth of the plant claimed 32 live during the agitation for setting up of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. Nevertheless, their sacrifices brought the steel plant to Visakhapatnam and city’s growth into one of India’s leading industrial hubs.
Visakhapatnam Steel Plant had a quick turnout by taking austerity measures and implementing the best management strategies with the help of experts. The VSP thus authored its own success story and reached a stage where it is in a firm position to compete with some of the world’s best and biggest steel makers. It is celebrating Silver Jubilee celebrations from February 18 to relive the glorious moments of its checkered history.
Visakhapatnam Steel Plant as on date has the distinction of being the best in various operational parameters and is poised to reach greater heights with the Rs.9000 crore expansion project. It has plans to increase its capacity to 6.3 tons by the end of 2008-09 while it is currently is producing 4.1 million tons of hot metal, 3.6 million tons of saleable steel. The net profit after tax stood at Rs.1252 crore in 2005-06. The total cost of capacity expansion to the 16 million mark is estimated to be Rs.26,000 crores.
