Major fraud unearthed in VisakhapatnamA major fraud became known on Tuesday in the Treasury office amounting to Rs. 1.41 crore. The Director of Treasuries and Accounts suspended Paderu Sub treasury officer S. Appa Rao and Assistant Treasury Officer B. Narasimha Murthy on the charge of drawing stipend payable to special education volunteers in violation of the Government Order.
They are accused of drawing Rs. 1.41 crore for six months during the period of May to October, 2005 from the treasury for paying salary of Rs. 1,500 per head while payments were supposed to be made with effect from November 2005. According to official sources, the Government recruited teachers who qualified in the 2002 DSC as SEV for a stipend of Rs. 1,000 per month. The Government has regularized them in 2005 and increase stipend to Rs. 1,500 p.m.
The treasury offices claimed that they had drawn the money to make payment of arrears to SEV for the previously mentioned period. However, the District Treasury Officer A. Lakshmi Kumari said that it recovered Rs. 25 lakhs from SEV and steps are to recover the balance. She maintained that it was a simple mistake, which was wrongly constructed as the violation of GOs and asserted that it was due to lack of clarity in implementing the orders.
