Liquor sale prohibited on eve of electionsThe Commissioner of Police, VSK Kaumudi said on Friday that liquor sale has been prohibited on the occasion of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation elections in the city. All bars, clubs, wine shops and toddy shops should remain closed from 5pm of February 17 to 5pm of February 19 and on February 21.
He said that Excise police check posts were set up to the control liquor sale and mobile police parties pressed into service. He appealed the candidates and all political parties to restrain from unnecessary arguments.
Meanwhile, the District Collector, AK Singhal declared a local holiday on February 19 for government offices and local bodies in the jurisdiction of GVMC under Negotiable Instruments Act. The declaration is also meant to enable the public and private undertakings in the purview of GVMC’s purview to facilitate employees to exercise their franchise. Local holiday was declared on February 18 and 19 and on the date of counting in respect of government offices and institutions where the buildings will utilized as polling stations and counting centres and however, Treasuries and sub treasuries have been exempted from the holiday.
