200 buses meant for North Coastal districts granted
The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has sanctioned 200 new buses for four North Andhra districts in addition to the 85 already allotted for the current financial year. The Executive Director of Vizianagaram and Vizianagaram Zones, S Dharma Reddy speaking to media on Sunday said that the State government had cleared the proposal to induct 2,000 buses across the State during the current financial year.
He said that the new buses were likely to be taken on hire from private operators as part of policy to cut down maintenance cost. He inaugurated a non stop super luxury bus to Kakinada. He added that the new buses will be deployed in rural areas under 'Palle Velugu' programme. He said that this is the first time in the history of the Corporation to so many buses were being acquired in one go and declared that their priority would be on improving passenger amenities, ensuring punctuality and upgrading the old buses with a complete new look.
He said that a notification would be issued in a couple of days seeking expression of interest to supply buses on hire from private operators. The regional offices have already identified the routes where the buses would be deployed. He announced that the Vizianagaram zone alone earned a profit of Rs.10 crores during the first quarter.
