They demanded additional accommodation for ST students
The Student Federation of India (SFI) activists on Friday organized a 'Chalo Collectorate' programme with demands for hostel accommodation and other facilities for SC,ST and BC students. The District Tribal Welfare Officer in charge KRD Prasada Rao told to the SFI activists that additional accommodation to the existing boys hostel another accommodation opposite the Prema Samajam was being finalized. He said that for girl students, the department was on the lookout for a building in MVP colony to set up an hostel in addition to the existing one.
The problem regarding accommodation to ST students cropped up this year as there were more admissions into the colleges then expected said the District Tribal Welfare officer in charge Prasada Rao said. With regard to the the demand for hostel accommodation for more number of BC students, the officials expressed helplessness and there were arguments between the District BC Welfare Officer and the students on the issue and also with District Revenue Officer. The DRO said that the admission into hostels should be done in accordance to the GO and they expressed their inability to take a decision.
At one stage, the SFI leaders threatened to occupy the Collector's Bungalow and the Social Welfare Office premises if accommodation was not provided. The District BC Welfare Officer said that the accommodation should be given according to the merit list of the students decided, after an examination was conducted by the AP Study Circle. The students left after submitting a memorandum to the DRO seeking additional accommodation for BC students.
