Protests against implementation of GO 638

Hundreds of activists on Friday laid siege at the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Building in protest against the implementation of GO 638. They surrounded the office around 11:00 AM and closed the main gates thus hindering the entry and exit of several officials, employees, ward councilors and the general public. They even stopped the entry of Deputy Mayor T Dorababu from entering the GVMC premises for sometime. This has led to the creation of a mild tension for sometime.

The Police who arrived at the spot resorted to lathi charge to disperse the demonstrating crowds and took several people into custody but later released them. Meanwhile, the CPM and CPI leaders found fault with the State Government for failing to fulfill its promise to sanction house sites under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
