Five Government Departments to identify accident prone areas
Five Government Departments have decided to identify accident prone areas on National and State Highways between Thandava Junction at Payakaraopet and Jalagalamadugu village of Anakapalli mandal and take necessary steps to check road accidents. This is a four-day pilot project undertaken by Road Transport, Roads and Buildings and Police Departments, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) that will commence from Friday.
The Superintendent of Police JG Murali speaking to media on Thursday said that there were 300 fatal accidents in 2005 and the number rose to 330 plus in 2006. Keeping in view of the increasing number accidents in the region, it has been decided to make comprehensive study of the conditions of the Roads and to take steps to bring down the accident rate.
He said that it has been resolved to check vehicles for driving licenses, registration documents and verify other things for a period of one month from May 1, 2007. People would be given ten days to regularize their vehicles without paying any penalty and after that hefty fines would be imposed. He opined that ninety percent of the vehicles plying in the agency areas are not having documents and such violations of the law would be curbed.
