Protests against Pole Tax
Cable TV operators will observe bandh on Friday in protest against the removal of cable wires from electric polls on the pretext of non payment of ‘Pole Tax’. They are also against the Corporation officials for their alleged pressure tactics in collecting entertainment tax and commercial tax. According to sources, there are nearly 1.5 lakh cable connections with about 300 area operators working under six master operators including Interment service providers in the city.
The Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation (GVMC) officials maintained that as per rules, they have to pay Rs.300 as deposit with annual fee of Rs.100 for each pole and have to pay Rs.5 per cable connection towards entertainment tax. Master Signal Operators' Association district president K Shandilya disputed the officials claim that they served notices seeking dues to be cleared. They even alleged that the cable operators were asked to pay dues without servicing notices and sought to know whether there was any such rule.
