Subscriber identity to be verified

In tune with the directive of the Centre to prevent extremist organizations from using telephone services for subversive activities, the telecom service providers in the city have been conducting a customer identity check for the past few months. The landline and mobile phone subscribers have been asked to furnish testimonial documents of personal identity and address proof to check the misuses of phone by another person. In case the subscriber fails to furnish the required declarations, the phone will be liable for disconnection.

The Visakhapatnam District Telecom General Manager Nagraju said the check was being conducted as per the instructions of the Central Government. The BSNL has already completed checking identity of landline subscribers. Private telecom operators have also been checking the identity and other details of their customers. Police officials have also stepped up vigil in the city to check infiltration of terrorists.
