Tension at Ukkunagaram after the incident
Tension prevailed at Ukkunagaram on Saturday as number of workers gathered as an auditorium under construction was Ukkunagaram Gana Sabha collapsed on Friday night claiming eight lives and leaving fifteen persons injured. Six bodies were shifted to the mortuary but agitated relatives of the workers were prevented the other two from being taken away from the site until a decision was announced on payment of compensation.
They raised slogans against Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) management and Pendurty MLA T. Gurumurthy Reddy. VSP management has announced an ex gratia of Rs.3 lakhs to the dependents of the deceased workers, Rs.50,000 to those injured severe injuries and Rs.25,000 for those who received minor injuries. The management also announced to reimburse the cost of the treatment and providing a job to the one of the deceased family.
The CPI (M) leader Ch Narasinga Rao criticized that the construction of the auditorium was taken up in violation of all technicalities in construction.
