Says housing projects should not be allowed at protected sites including Buddhist sites
The High Court directed the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) not to allow any housing projects in the area that is declared as a protected area. The High Court has come up with this in response to a petition filed by the Buddha Vihara Foundation Trust (BVFT) seeking protection to the ancient monuments in and around the Buddhist complex from the housing complex construction activity. The VUDA and the District Collector are amongst the respondents.
The High Court said that no person, including the owner of occupier of a project area shall construct any building within the protected area or carry on any mining, quarrying, excavating, blasting or any other operation of a like nature in such area or utilise such area or any party thereof in any manner without the permission of the Government.
The Buddhist Complex at Madhurawada is declared as a protected site as per the Andhra Pradesh Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains Act, 1960. With this the 40-acre Rs. 139 crore project will go into question.
