Silk Air of Singapore Airlines would start Vizag-Singapore service once runway get upgraded
A fast growing city needs an international airport with night landing facilities. This is highlighted at the seminar organized by the Air Passengers Association of India. Eminent personalities from various Governmental and Non-Governmental agencies were present at the seminar and expressed their views. Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command said that Visakhapatnam has the advantage of having India's best port connectivity but the lack of an international airport is hindering the growth. General Manager (Projects) of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) said that new runway that will be ready by January 2007 will be able to handle larger aircrafts such as the B-757. He said said that the new terminal building will be a centralized AC building with aero-bridges for the convenience of the physically challenged.
Member of Parliament from Visakhapatnam N Janardhana Reddy said that the State and the Central Governments were apprised of the situation and needs of the airport, particularly because of the recent flooding of the airport due to the release of water from the Meghadrigedda reservoir and that the two were working on it. A presentation themed 'Emergence of a multidimensional city – Visakhapatnam' by RV Rama Rao, the chief co-ordinator of the Institute of Development and Planning Studies dealt with what Visakhapatnam is so far and how the future is destined. D Varada Reddy, Area Chairman of the Air Passengers Association of India said that Silk Air, a subsidiary of the Singapore Airlines was planning to launch its air services from Visakhapatnam to Singapore once the airport expansion project is done. Once this materializes, the connectivity of Visakhapatnam with other International destinations will begin.
