President Abdul Kalam asks Indian Navy to be prepared to take additional responsibilities
President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam expressed satisfaction at the performance of the Indian Navy as a part of the Presidential Fleet Review and the Operational Prowess Demonstration (OPD) at Visakhapatnam. Besides the President, Union Defence Minister Pranab Mukharje, Union Ministers of State T Subbarami Reddy and MM Pallam Raju, Air Chief Marshal SP Tyagi, Chief of Army Staff General JJ Singh and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Arun Prakash, Senior officials witnessed the demonstrations of the Indian Navy. Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy and Union Defence Minister Pranab Mukharjee earlier received the President were not present for the OPD program. The Indian President released a commemorative stamp to mark the Presidential Fleet Review 2006 released by the Department of Post.
Vizagities had a festival time as the Indian Navy showed its display at the sea. Thousands of people from round the city were present starting early morning at the Rama Krishna Beach and other beach areas to see the Naval demonstrations. As many as 67 warships, submarines, aircraft and helicopters from the Indian Navy and Coast guard have taken part in the demonstrations. Missile blast fired from naval vessels illuminated the night sky for a brief period.
