The steep hike in diesel prices could spell the doom of the fishing industry according to the general secretary of the Visakha Dolphin Boat Operators’ Welfare Association, Ch. Satyanarayana Murty. He said that a mechanized boat provides direct and indirect employment to 100 fishermen families.
The decline in operations of these boats during the last four years has severely hit mechanics, carpenters, fibre workers, ice factories. While there were about 400 boats in Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour only about seventy percent were being operated.
The hike in the diesel price in the last had resulted in some of the operators not plying their mechanized boats. The Association appealed to the Central Government to immediately withdraw the hike and save the industry from an impending crisis.
