Hunger strike from March 1st to 3rd
The Social Welfare Residential Schools Teachers Union has asked the Government to resolve the pending issues immediately failing which it will launch an indefinite hunger strike from 4th March. Addressing a press conference on Saturday, the State president of the union A. Madhusudhan listed out the problems faced by teachers of the residential schools/colleges. He said 138 of the 296 residential schools/colleges in the State were run by in charge principals. There were instances where a single principal handled two institutions and others where contract teachers were placed at the helm.
This is hampering the quality of education imparted in the institutions. Another demand was filling up of 2100 vacant posts in residential schools and medical reimbursement and bifurcation of upgraded schools. The union would submit a memorandum to the district Collectors on February 15th and follow it up with a relay hunger strike from March 1st to 3rd. If the Government still failed to respond, a fast unto death would be resorted to, he said.
