Praja Sapandana, a forum for common cause and protection of public interest has appealed to the President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam to bring to bear on the Government of India to declare 2006 as the Year of Austerity.
In a letter to the President, Praja Spandana president CS Rao has urged him to see it that public expenditure on ostentatious functions, celebrations and official lunches/diners was avoided to save as much money as possible. He also suggested the scaling down of the Republic Day Celebrations.
The money thus saved could be utilized to provide relief to those suffering on account of devastating calamities like cyclones, torrential rains, earthquakes, tsunami that ravaged several parts of the country during 2005, he said.
